They Shall Not Be Silent

In the summer of 1656, two Quaker women stepped off a ship in Boston harbour and walked into a world that would spend the next five years trying to destroy them. What followed was one of the most consequential confrontations in American religious history: a covenant community of absolute theological certainty against four itinerant missionaries who refused, at the cost of their lives, to accept its authority over their consciences.

Between 1659 and 1661, the Massachusetts Bay Colony hanged four members of the Society of Friends - Marmaduke Stephenson, William Robinson, Mary Dyer, and William Leddra - under a capital statute enacted specifically to silence them. It did not silence them. The executions that were meant to defend the Puritan holy commonwealth instead exposed its deepest contradiction: that a society built on the premise of divine liberty could only sustain itself through mortal terror.
