Some boys dream of adventure. Tom Crean lived it.
Born in a small village in Ireland, Tom Crean grew up far from the frozen wilderness of Antarctica. Yet, while still a boy, he left home and joined the Royal Navy, beginning a journey that would carry him farther than he could ever have imagined.
Before long, Tom found himself sailing south into a world of towering icebergs, violent storms and endless fields of snow. Alongside legendary explorers such as Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton, he faced some of the most dangerous journeys in the history of Antarctic exploration.
He hauled sledges across the ice, endured hunger and terrible cold, survived disasters at sea, and walked alone for miles through an Antarctic blizzard to save the lives of his companions.
But Tom Crean was never interested in becoming a hero.
