She was having tea when the screaming started.

It was a Saturday afternoon in March 1911, and Frances Perkins was thirty years old, visiting friends near Washington Square. She followed the noise out to the street and found herself standing under the Triangle Shirtwaist factory, looking up at girls on a ninth-floor ledge with the fire behind them and the doors locked. She watched them decide whether to jump. One of them fixed her hat first, the way you would before going outside. The whole thing took forty minutes. A hundred and forty-six people died, most of them young women, some of them children.

Frances Perkins spent the rest of her life making sure it meant something.

She was not a famous woman, and she did not become one easily. But over the next three decades she did the slow, unglamorous work of turning what she had seen into law: the minimum wage, the eight-hour day, an end to child labor, Social Security itself. She became the first woman in a president's cabinet and stayed longer than any Secretary of Labor before or since. Almost everyone reading this is standing on something she built. Almost no one knows her name.

This is the story of what she saw, and what she did about it. It is also a reminder that none of it was guaranteed, then or now. The protections we treat as permanent were built by hand, by people who decided not to look away.

Not sentiment, not guilt. Obligation. A hundred and forty-six names were not a number to her. They were a demand.
