Although a variety of hard particles are used as particulate fillers in polymeric resins, the use of industrial waste materials for this purpose has not been adequately explored. Blast furnace slag (BFS) is one such industrial by-product, generated in large quantities during ironmaking in the iron and steel industry. The present work investigates the utilization of this solid waste, BF slag, as a filler material in polymer composites based on epoxy and polypropylene (PP). Chemical analysis of BF slag indicates the presence of oxides of calcium, silicon, magnesium, aluminum, iron, and titanium. This book presents the manufacturing details and wear characteristics of a series of epoxy-BFS and PP-BFS composites, both with and without glass fiber reinforcement. The tribological behavior of BF slag-reinforced composites is characterized with respect to their physical and mechanical properties. Extensive property data have been generated through various characterization tests conducted under controlled laboratory conditions to evaluate the mechanical performance of the BFS-filled composites.
