An old Finnish folk tale about wisdom, loyalty, courage, and what happens after a promise is broken.

Long ago, beside a quiet Finnish lake, lived a merchant named Antti and his wife, Liisa.

Liisa was extraordinarily beautiful - but her greatest gift was not her beauty. She possessed the rarer wisdom to see danger before others noticed it, to know when silence was wiser than speech, and to act decisively when trouble came.

Before Antti leaves on a long trading journey, Liisa asks him for one simple promise:

Do not boast about me.

But far from home, in the court of a foreign king, pride gets the better of him. One careless boast about his wife's beauty is enough to place him under guard and send royal men north to Finland to see Liisa for themselves.

Liisa had warned him.

She has every reason to be angry.

But being right will not open a prison door.

Disguising herself as a young nobleman, Liisa sets out alone. She rides across a foreign kingdom, enters royal service, proves herself in battle, wins the trust of a prince, attracts the attention of a princess, and must even outwit a suspicious royal court -all while hiding who she truly is.

Her plan will require courage, patience, humor, and an unusual pair of helpers: a squirrel and a stoat.

Yet the heart of this tale is not simply Liisa's clever escape plan. It is the quieter wisdom behind her choices.

Can you remain loyal to someone who has disappointed you?
Can anger be justified without becoming the only guide for what you do next?
And once trust has been damaged, how can it ever be rebuilt?

Based on the Finnish folk tale "Kun vaimo on viisas, niin onkin hän oikein viisas," published by Jalmari Finne in 1909, this expanded literary retelling brings the story to life among Finland's lakes, birch forests, wooden homes, saunas, and long northern roads.

Beautifully illustrated and rich in Finnish atmosphere, When a Wife Is Wise is a timeless story about practical courage, quiet strength, family loyalty, and the difference between simply being right - and being truly wise.
